The most common mistake couples make when one spouse is a foreign national is to assume that the process ends with the marriage ceremony. In fact the ceremony is only the first step: the spouse's right to remain in Turkey, the updating of the civil registry records and any later citizenship application are separate, sequential tasks. If the order is muddled, each one is delayed.
1. Registering the marriage in the civil registry
A marriage solemnised in Turkey before a marriage registrar is transferred to the civil registry records. Marriages solemnised abroad , by contrast, are not recorded automatically: the marriage certificate has to be notified together with proper certification (an apostille or consular legalisation) and a sworn translation. If this step is skipped, every later procedure — the residence permit included — is left without a foundation.
2. The family residence permit application
The foreign spouse of a Turkish citizen applies for a family residence permit. The permit rests on the marriage and on the family union actually continuing ; the administration may carry out checks on this point.
- 1
Appointment and form
The application is made through e-İkamet. The information declared must match the documents exactly.
- 2
Marriage and civil registry documents
A currently dated civil registry extract and the marriage certificate; foreign documents require translation and certification.
- 3
Health insurance
A valid policy covering the whole of the permit period applied for is mandatory. We explain the conditions on our health insurance page.
- 4
Income and accommodation declaration
To show that the family union is sustainable, you are asked to document income and the place where you will live.
- 5
Submission and follow-up
The file is submitted and, if a missing-documents notice arrives, completed within the time allowed. The process is followed up as part of our residence permit consultancy service.
3. Surname and identity records
A change of surname follows your own choice and the applicable legislation; if a change is made, the passport, the residence card and all bank records must be updated with the same spelling . A single letter of difference between records is one of the most common reasons a file stalls at a later application.
4. Turkish citizenship through marriage
Marriage does not confer citizenship automatically. For an application, the law requires that the marriage has actually continued for a certain period and has been lived within a family union; there is also a condition of not engaging in any activity incompatible with the marital union. We assess how the period and the conditions apply to your file as part of our citizenship consultancy service; we have gathered the list of documents in our documents and translation requirements article.
5. The spouse working
A family residence permit does not by itself grant the right to work; to work you also need a work permit . This distinction should be clarified before starting a job.
Timeline: what is done, and when, after the ceremony?
The first week: obtaining the marriage certificate and checking the civil registry record; if the ceremony took place abroad, starting the certification and translation process. The first month: taking out the health insurance policy, updating the address registration, the e-İkamet appointment. If the spouse's current visa or residence period is running out, this step cannot wait; an overstay creates a separate problem. The first three months: the outcome of the family residence permit file, delivery of the card and, where needed, matching bank and insurance records to the new details. The period after that: the permit extension calendar and tracking the period the law requires for citizenship. We put this calendar in writing in your file, because the most frequent loss comes from a forgotten renewal date.
Which documents need translation?
Every document coming from the foreign spouse's country requires sworn translation and, in most cases, notarisation : the birth record, the certificate of capacity to marry, where there was a previous marriage the decision ending it, the criminal record certificate and passport pages. Where the ceremony took place abroad, the marriage certificate joins this set. In our documents requiring notarised translation article we set out, document by document, which ones genuinely need notarial certification. If one of the parties does not speak Turkish at the marriage ceremony, the marriage registrar will ask for sworn interpreter to be present.
Common mistakes
Not notifying a marriage that took place abroad. A residence permit application made with an uncertified marriage certificate is refused. Insurance dates that do not cover the permit period. One of the most common grounds for refusal. Applying for citizenship too early. An application made before the period has elapsed costs official fees and time for nothing. Not updating the address registration. Official notification goes to the registered address; a letter that does not arrive means a missed deadline.
Because official fees and notary charges are updated every year, we do not quote figures here; we set out the items your file requires in writing at the initial consultation.
Legal basis
The provisions of the Turkish Civil Code No. 4721 on marriage; the provisions of Law No. 6458 on Foreigners and International Protection on the family residence permit; the provisions of the Turkish Citizenship Law No. 5901 on the acquisition of citizenship through marriage.
