Marriage Ceremony Interpreting

Complete paperwork on the day and a declaration understood correctly

If one of the parties at a marriage ceremony does not speak Turkish, an interpreter must be present so that the declarations can be understood. Conveying correctly the consent given before the marriage registrar matters for the validity of the marriage.

At BKT we are with you not only on the day of the ceremony but also through the paperwork beforehand. We complete the apostille and sworn translation of documents such as the certificate of capacity to marry, the birth certificate and the divorce decree, and provide interpreter accompaniment on the day.

Who is it for?

  • Foreign nationals who will marry a Turkish citizen
  • Two foreigners marrying in Türkiye
  • Couples preparing their marriage paperwork
  • Couples carrying out procedures at a consulate
  • Those planning a family residence permit after marriage
  • Those looking for an interpreter as part of their wedding arrangements

Required documents

The list below is for a typical case. Additional documents may be requested depending on your nationality, the type of application and the practice of the relevant authority; the definitive list is given to you in writing at the initial consultation.

  • Passport and its notarised translation
  • Certificate of capacity to marry and its translation
  • Birth certificate or civil registry extract
  • If divorced, the final divorce decree and its translation

Marriage ceremony interpreting — frequently asked questions

Is an interpreter compulsory at the marriage ceremony?

If one of the parties does not speak Turkish, an interpreter must be present so that their declaration can be understood. Registry offices require this.

Does the interpreter have to be sworn?

Because it is an official procedure, a sworn translator is preferred. In practice, registry offices expect this too.

Can the witnesses act as interpreter?

Acting as a witness and acting as an interpreter are different functions. For the declarations to be conveyed correctly, it is appropriate to have an independent interpreter present.

How long does the paperwork take?

The timeline depends on obtaining the documents from abroad and on the apostille stage. If you already have the documents, the translation and certification are completed quickly.

Can I obtain a residence permit after the marriage?

Marriage provides a basis for a family residence permit application. The application is made separately and requires its own set of documents.

What do we provide in this process?

On cases that call for legal assessment — appeals, administrative proceedings and refusal decisions — we work together with a lawyer.

Transparency on process and fees

Before we begin, the document list, the steps, a realistic time expectation and the total fee are shared in writing.
